After visiting Hiroshima, we took the JR line to the JR ferry to the island of Miyajima all with our rail passes. Those things are very handy albeit $$$. We landed on the Miyajima island and was suddenly struck by the docile deer meandering through the crowds. We even saw a deer sneak into a woman's purse when she wasn't watching. We made our way to the O-Torii gate at the edge of the water. We were there in low tide so we were able to walk right up to the gate and place a coin on the base.
We headed to the itsukushima shrine which at high tide sits in water. Such an interesting site and the weather was perfect, breezy, not to warm. We were lucky and had a lovely time.
We visited the five storied pagoda and then the Toyokuni shrine which was one of our favorite places on the trip. It is all old wood and was a library of Buddhist sutras although was never finished in its construction due to war.
View from library. And our final shot of the gate.
