Next stop was the kinkaku rokuon-ji temple (or golden temple). This temple has been rebuilt & destroyed so many times, most recently in the 1980's a fanatical monk burned it to the ground. It's gold leaf inside and out and utterly beautiful in the sun.
Then off to the famed Ryoan-ji temple which queen Elizabeth visited years ago and since has been a huge tourist destination. It's so peaceful here, you don't even mind the crowds around you.
Moving right along... Next stop was Tenryu-ji temple and the bamboo forest.
Our lovely guide for the day, Noriko.
This was a garden built on the mountainside above the bamboo forest by a famous silent Japanese actor.
As we made our way to the train we saw this hot springs on the side of the tracks where people took off their shoes and submerged their feet in the water. Brilliant!
We finished this busy day eating dinner at "sugar hill", and excellent Asian fusion restaurant.
